The weekend has been booked in the diary for a few weeks now. The plan? As much Trad Climbing as possible. Location? Stanage Edge in the Peak District.
It's been too long since I last climbed trad and I couldn't wait. I finished work on the Friday and waited for my climbing buddy Zoli to come up to me from home in Brighton. Both of us were a little bit too excited for this. The weather was looking great for it.
I managed to find us a great place to stay. A place called Pindale Farm in a town called Hope. £15 a night each! Full kitchen and our own toilet and shower. The room slept 8 people but the owners do not mix groups. So we had the whole room to ourselves. The owners were very friendly.
After we checked in at 2200 we popped out to grab some food. Chinese was our decision and it was not good. I'm sorry but do not go to the Chinese restaurant in Hope. A lot of it we couldn't eat. Not cool. If we hadn't of got a takeaway we would have sent it back. Let's get one thing straight, I'm not a snob when it comes to food or a 'foodie', just simply wasn't great. Anyway, enough of the food and more on the climbing.
Woke up Saturday morning and the clag had rolled in big time. Couldn't see anything and it rained throughout the night. It started to burn off by the time we found somewhere for breakfast so I was happy. And the rock being warm anyway at this time of year meant it wasn't wet. Happy days!
The climbing here is superb. The Peak District is a very popular destination as the grit stone is lovely to climb. Everything is single pitch which is cool. Means you get a lot of routes ticked off in a weekend. Stanage Edge is very popular with a great selection of routes of all grades. Do get there early to avoid disappointment if you have a project route or want the best parking.
By early afternoon the sun was shining and it was lovely. Just right. Climbing in t-shirt and shorts is great and everyone was having a great time. I love climbing for the social side. You will always end up talking to people near by.
Lots of routes were completed on the Saturday and we were both so pumped from a great days climbing. Back to the accomodation, showered and changed as we were stinking then off out for dinner. The town of Castleton is only a twenty minute walk. We had been talking of Steak and Chips all day and now it was happening. It was good and was washed down with some Beer and Ale and a cheeky desert to follow.
After a good nights sleep it was time to hit the crag again. We decided to head back to the same spot. Was good parking and we had our eye on a couple of routes we saw the day before. The morning was spent ticking off a couple of routes. After lunch time we decided to call it a day. We had to get back to Kent and then Zoli had to get back down to Brighton. We were happy to call it now.
The weekend was superb, we were fortunate enough to find somewhere great to stay, a good climbing spot and the weather was great for it. Definitely recommend Stanage Edge for some trad climbing.
Are you a rock climber? I would love to hear where you have been climbing. Perhaps you would like to feature on my blog. Email me your stories and we can go from there.
